Tom Petty was one of those rock acts who sounded better live than the studio recording. Along with his band The Heartbreakers, they brought the house down with this searing take on “A Woman in Love (It’s Not Me)). It’s glorious and fascinating, and Petty didn’t disappoint with his vocal performance.
“A Woman in Love (It’s Not Me)” was written by Petty and Mike Campbell. It only peaked at #79 on the US Billboard Hot 100 but it’s widely considered as one of Petty’s finest compositions which says a lot because he was always a great storyteller. According to Petty, this song wasn’t that commercially successful because it was overshadowed by his collaboration with Stevie Nicks on the classic “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around”.
“”A Woman in Love” would have been more successful if the two songs had been released further apart. I’m sure of it,” he said. “‘Cause they came out roughly the same time, and Stevie’s record was huge.”
He added that it was “an awkward position” for them “because it was billed as ‘Stevie Nicks With Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers,’ and a lot of the radio programmers didn’t want to have two Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers songs around the same period.”
