A New Look at Life After The Beatles
A new trailer has been released for director Morgan Neville’s documentary Paul McCartney: Man on the Run, offering a close look at one of the most uncertain and creative periods of McCartney’s life. The film focuses on what happened after The Beatles broke up in 1970, when McCartney stepped away from the most famous band in the world and tried to figure out his next move.
The documentary asks a simple but powerful question: what happens when you wake up the morning after leaving the most important rock band of all time? Rather than focusing on Beatlemania, the film centers on McCartney’s search for purpose during the years that followed.
Starting Over in a New Decade
After The Beatles split, McCartney released his first solo album, McCartney, in April 1970. When asked at the time what he planned to do next, he said his only goal was to grow up. That moment set the tone for the years ahead, marked by doubt, reinvention, and steady creative work.
Paul McCartney: Man on the Run explores this period in detail, following McCartney as he built a new life and sound outside of The Beatles. The film tracks his early solo efforts and the formation of Wings, the band he created with his late wife Linda McCartney.
Voices and Images From the Era
The documentary uses a wide range of archival material to tell its story. This includes rare footage, Linda McCartney’s photographs, and new interviews. McCartney appears alongside Linda, daughters Mary and Stella McCartney, and several former Wings band members.
Other voices featured in the film include John Lennon’s son Sean Ono Lennon, Rolling Stones singer Sir Mick Jagger, Chrissie Hynde, and more. Together, they help paint a fuller picture of McCartney’s life during the 1970s, a time when he faced criticism but continued to push forward.
A Personal and Honest Portrait
Rather than focusing only on success, the film looks at McCartney during moments of vulnerability. It shows how he dealt with public doubt, legal battles, and the pressure of living up to his past work. At the same time, it highlights how Wings grew into a major band and helped McCartney regain confidence as a performer and songwriter.
The trailer gives a preview of this tone, balancing quiet personal moments with live performances and behind-the-scenes footage.
