David Gilmour surprised fans with his first live performance in four years, appearing at an open-mic night in East Sussex.
The Pink Floyd legend took the stage at the Neptune Live Music Bar, joining his daughter Romany Gilmour to perform the classic “Wish You Were Here” from the 1975 Pink Floyd album of the same name.
Gilmour seemed to enjoy the impromptu gig. In a post on X, he shared, “I very much enjoyed crashing” the open-mic night “after finishing tour rehearsals.” The venue later described the night as an “electrifying evening,” as fans were thrilled to see the unexpected appearance of the legendary guitarist.
This surprise performance comes just as Gilmour is preparing for his upcoming tour in support of his newly released album Luck and Strange. The tour will feature U.S. dates in October and November, along with residencies at London’s Royal Albert Hall and Rome’s Circo Massimo.
Romany invited her father to join her on stage, playfully asking if he wanted to “come and upstage me.” Their collaboration wasn’t a first. Romany contributed vocals and harp to two tracks on Luck and Strange: “Between Two Points” and the bonus track, “Yes, I Have Ghosts.” The latter song was initially released as a single in 2020, marking their first collaboration.
Reflecting on their work together, Gilmour said:
“I was working on this song just as we went into lockdown and had to cancel a session with backing singers – but, as it turned out, the solution was right here. I couldn’t be happier with the way Romany’s voice blends with mine, and her beautiful harp playing has been another revelation.”
Gilmour’s last live appearance was in 2020 at a tribute concert for Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green at the London Palladium. Fans can watch his recent surprise performance on video, capturing a rare and special moment for the iconic musician.
