Kansas has chosen a familiar face to step in as their new bassist and co-lead vocalist, following Billy Greer’s retirement after nearly four decades with the band. Dan McGowan, who recently substituted for Greer, has been officially promoted to the position.
Hailing from southern New Jersey, McGowan has previously played bass in Gold Rotation, a band led by Kansas keyboardist Tom Brislin. His arrival marks a complete overhaul of Kansas’s rhythm section this year. Earlier, long-time drum tech Eric Holmquist replaced veteran drummer Phil Ehart, who stepped down in February due to health concerns.
“I am thrilled and honored to be joining Kansas,” McGowan shared in an official statement. He added:
“I am also deeply aware of the gigantic shoes that I will be filling. [Early-era Kansas bassist] Dave Hope and Billy Greer are among the best musicians in rock history.”
McGowan’s dedication to his new role is clear. He wants fans to know:
“I love the music of Kansas, and I hold it in highest reverence. I am committed to doing justice to the band’s incredible legacy, and I am so grateful for this unbelievable opportunity!”
While taking on this new chapter with Kansas, McGowan remains a member of the progressive rock band the Tea Club, where he performs with his brother Patrick. He also contributes to the band as a cover artist, and they are set to release their sixth album later this year.
Billy Greer, who joined Kansas just before their 1986 album Power, has had a remarkable tenure, performing in over 2,300 concerts. He retired after a final performance in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, making him one of the band’s longest-serving members alongside Ehart and guitarist Rich Williams. Greer also acted as the group’s in-concert emcee, leaving behind a legacy that McGowan will now help carry forward.
