A Heavenly Improv

Late pianist of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Powell, performs one of the most moving and inspiration piano improvisations ever to grace a stage in this short, yet sweet clip. Widely known as one of the greatest pianists in rock history, Billy Powell was a beloved member of the southern rock legacy, but more importantly an essential family member of the Jacksonville brotherhood.

Interesting Fact: In elementary school, Powell met Leon Wilkeson, who would become a lifelong friend and the bassist for Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Just a decade before the talented musician was lost to a severe and unfortunate heart attack on January 28, 2009, Billy gave the intimate Austin City Limits crowd just what they wanted before the rest of the band returned to stage. With his smooth hand crossover improv mixed with some seriously blues high pitched keys, Billy is the definition of perfection and it just makes us miss him that much more.

Watching Billy soulfully tap those keys, decked out in his killer shades and white boots, we remember the collection of music and sweet melodies that Billy bettered Skynyrd with over the years and honor his legacy both behind and in front of the keyboards.

RIP Billy.. we miss you.
