The Piano Man was able to pour some sugar at Detroit’s Comerica Park on Saturday night thanks to a scheduling coincidence.

The night before Def Leppard and Motley Crue’s The Stadium Tour were set, Billy Joel performed at the same arena. Joe Elliott joined Joel and his eight-piece band for a faithful cover of their 1987 hit song “Pour Some Sugar on Me” in front of more than 38,000 fans at the ballpark halfway through Joel’s performance.

This was their third time performing the song. The duo played it in 2018 at Boston’s Fenway Park and in 2019 at Madison Square Garden.  Elliott greeted the audience with a simple “Evenin’!” before starting the song. He was lively the entire time approaching Joel at the front of the stage and grinning all the while.

“A Room of Our Own” from 1982’s The Nylon Curtain album was also played during Joel’s two hours and fourteen minute performance. Joel performed this song onstage for the first time ever on November 10, 1982, also in Detroit, at the now-demolished Joe Louis Arena.

Before the show, Joel said of the song in an interview with the Oakland Press:

“This wasn’t a hit single, either, but I like playing this one.”

“There are songs in the show that I really like to do, which are the more obscure ones. I tend to like the album tracks more than the hit singles. I feel a certain sense of pride and satisfaction after I finish those songs. I think to myself, “That wasn’t bad. I don’t remember how I wrote it or why I wrote it, but that’s pretty good.”

Due to the pandemic, Joel’s Detroit performance, which was initially set for July 2020 was postponed twice. On July 20, he is set to perform at Madison Square Garden and on August 11 in Pittsburgh’s PNC Park.
