Sing Me A Tune

From 1967 Traffic album Mr. Fantasy, Steve Winwood’s performance of “Dear Mr. Fantasy” will captivate every inch of you from your eyes to your ears with his extremely “lit up” eyes and intense facial expressions.

“Sing a song, play guitar, make it snappy. You are the one who can make us all laugh, but doing that you break out in tears…”

Written by Jim Capaldi, “Dear Mr. Fantasy” tells the story of a troubled joker that performs and entertains everyone else but tends to make himself by doing so, which is actually the hidden reality of several comedians and rock stars behind the scenes. Not only do the lyrics display a great, sad and well-thought out story, but Steve’s playing in this particular performance proves that he was one of the best.

Interesting Fact: The song was on the setlist of Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton’s joint tour in 2009. A live recording appears on the album Live from Madison Square Garden.

Although we are not sure what influenced these specific lyrics, it may be safe to say that it reveals the way talented artists truly feel at the beck and call of the world, despite the amount of money they make. It is no wonder that Steve caught the attention of the great Eric Clapton’s eye when watching this performance, he was truly electric. Enjoy!

+ Dear Mr. Fantasy Lyrics +

Dear Mister Fantasy play us a tune
Something to make us all happy
Do anything take us out of this gloom
Sing a song, play guitar, make it snappy
You are the one who can make us all laugh
But doing that you break out in tears
Please don’t be sad if it was a straight mind you had
We wouldn’t have known you all these years

Dear Mister Fantasy play us a tune
Something to make us all happy
Do anything take us out of this gloom
Sing a song, play guitar, make it snappy
You are the one who can make us all laugh
But doing that you break out in tears
Please don’t be sad if it was a straight mind you had
We wouldn’t have known you all these years

Dear Mister Fantasy play us a tune
Something to make us all happy
Do anything take us out of this gloom
Sing a song, play guitar, make it snappy
You are the one who can make us all laugh
But doing that you break out in tears
Please don’t be sad if it was a straight mind you had
We wouldn’t have known you all these years
