Lucia Flores-Wiseman made waves during the Live Semi-Finals of The Voice on Monday, May 12, with a haunting and emotional take on Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun.” A proud Seattle native, the 23-year-old singer honored her hometown’s grunge legacy while also showing off her impressive vocal range and originality.

Lucia first captured attention during her blind audition, turning all four chairs in less than 40 seconds with her powerful rendition of Angela Aguilar’s La Llorona. Since then, she’s only continued to prove she’s a serious contender, moving through the rounds with performances of Frank Sinatra’s My Funny Valentine, Benson Boone’s Slow It Down, and an emotional version of The Beatles’ In My Life during the Playoffs.

A Tribute to Seattle Roots

For the Semi-Finals, Lucia selected “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden, one of the most iconic grunge songs to come out of Seattle. She shared that this performance was a nod to her city and the musical legacy that shaped her. “That’s what the whole Seattle scene is all about, just raw emotion,” she said.

She originally planned to perform with her guitar, but her coach Adam Levine encouraged a bold change. He suggested dropping the guitar and using an orchestral arrangement instead to emphasize the emotional depth of the song. Lucia took his advice, and the result was a show-stopping performance set against a red, apocalyptic backdrop, with a haunting string section behind her. “I do not like being in a box,” she told Adam, explaining how her parents exposed her to everything from punk and folk to grunge and rock.

Reactions from the Coaches and Fans

As Lucia performed, the power of her voice and the dramatic staging quickly won over the coaches. John Legend was spotted nodding in approval, clearly impressed by the performance. Host Carson Daly summed it up by saying, “That was the most Adam Levine performance ever,” acknowledging Levine’s deep admiration for Soundgarden and Chris Cornell.

Kelsea Ballerini had nothing but praise: “I think whatever you want to do with your voice, the opportunities are endless. I’m a fan. You’re a star. You don’t need me to tell you that. I’m excited to see what’s next.” Levine simply called her “the real deal.”
