Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham‘s relationship romantically and musically has been a source of drama for more than 40 years now, but some people are still unaware of what really happened between these two icons.

The duo was already in a relationship prior to joining Fleetwood Mac on New Year’s Eve 1974. The band and Buckingham agreed on the new line up on the condition that his music partner and girlfriend, Nicks, be included. Later on, their addition to the band proved to be a success as they both helped boost Fleetwood Mac in popularity.

Although, things got rough when they started recording in Northern California for their 1977 album Rumours. The couple broke up in the midst of their writing sessions. In an interview, Nicks recalled decades later:

“Lindsey and I had a very bad fight right… right before we were getting ready to go back to L.A. and I said, ‘We’re done. I think that this is over. I don’t think that all the king’s horses and all the king’s men can put this back together again.’”

Despite the breakup, both of them agreed they would stay in the band. Nicks remembered saying:

“No matter what it takes, we’re gonna keep Fleetwood Mac together and our breaking up is not gonna break up this band. And I’m not gonna quit and neither are you.”

They continued being bandmates and actually helped inspire some of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest hits. But being exes in a group resulted in one of the most epic rock feuds in history. Over the years, Nicks and Buckingham have lashed out at each other many times in song lyrics and the press.

Most recently, Buckingham explained to CBS Sunday Morning in 2018:

“I think sometimes [Stevie] might find it difficult that I was lucky enough to find my soul mate late in life and got married and that was something she never did.”
