The Song That Started It All
Despite the backlash they received for being a made-for-TV band, The Monkees proved early on that they weren’t just actors hired to play a fictitious band. They released a string of international hits, the biggest being smash hit and cultural icon ‘I’m A Believer’, the song that put the band on the map and forced the world to take them seriously as a band. Apparently, it worked: at their peak in 1967, The Monkees outsold both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined!
Written by acclaimed singer-songwriter Neil Diamond, ‘I’m A Believer’ was recorded by The Monkees in 1966. It hit the #1 spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and remained there for seven weeks, becoming the last No. 1 hit of 1966 and the biggest-selling record for all of 1967.
Not bad for a “made for TV band”, right?
Later, the song was covered for the smash hit film Shrek by 90’s rock group Smashmouth, though it’s widely agreed that the original rendition by The Monkees is an international classic that’s definitely stood the test of time.
+ I’m A Believer lyrics +
I thought love was only true in fairytales
Meant for someone else but not for me
Love was out to get me
That’s the way it seemed
Disappointment haunted all my dreams
Then I saw her face, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I’m in love, I’m a believer
I couldn’t leave her if I tried
I thought love was more or less a givin’ thing
But the more I gave the less I got
What’s the use in trying?
All you get is pain
When I needed sunshine I got rain
Then I saw her face, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I’m in love, I’m a believer
I couldn’t leave her if I tried
Love was out to get me
Now that’s the way it seemed
Disappointment haunted all my dreams
Oh then I saw her face, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I’m in love, I’m a believer
I couldn’t leave her if I tried
Yes I saw her face, now I’m a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
Said I’m a believer, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(I’m a believer)
Said I’m a believer, yeah
(I’m a believer)
Said I’m a believer, yeah
(I’m a believer)
