Peter Gabriel has shared the fourth single from his forthcoming album o\i, continuing the gradual rollout of new material. The track, titled “Till Your Mind Is Shining,” is one he describes as the closest he comes to a traditional pop sound on the record.

According to Gabriel, the song originated from a chord progression he found particularly engaging and upbeat. “The song began around a chord sequence which I liked and which felt quite poppy and playful,” he explained. “So I just kept on playing around with it till I had something. Of all the songs that I’ve written for i/o and o\i, this is probably the poppiest for me.”

A Return to Early Influences

Gabriel reflected on how the track reconnects him with his early musical roots, dating back to his formative years before his time with Genesis. “It takes me back to my schooldays, in some ways,” he said, noting that he and his peers were more focused on songwriting than musicianship at the time. “Pop songs or soul / R&B songs. I think this song connects me back to some of those roots and the sort of thing that I was working on then and trying to master.”

Beyond its musical influences, the song also carries a deeper thematic message. Gabriel described it as an exploration of introspection and awareness. “In some ways it’s about opening up the mind and stepping inside to understand a little more of ourselves and the world we live in,” he explained, “with the hope that we respond a little more responsibly and compassionately.”

Continuing the i/o Release Approach

Following the same release strategy as his 2023 album i/o, Gabriel is unveiling o\i one track at a time in sync with the lunar cycle. Each song is accompanied by two distinct versions: a “bright-side” mix and a “dark-side” mix. For “Till Your Mind Is Shining,” the darker mix by Tchad Blake has been released first, while the brighter interpretation by Mark “Spike” Stent is set to arrive with the next new moon.

The Story Behind the Artwork

As with previous releases, each song from o\i is paired with unique artwork. This installment features work by contemporary Japanese artist Tatsuo Miyajima.

Gabriel recalled visiting Hiroshima and speaking with survivors of the atomic bombing—an experience that left a lasting impression on him. “I went to Hiroshima a few years back and talked to some of the survivors of the bomb,” he said, describing them as extraordinary individuals committed to preserving the memory of that devastation. “I really wanted an image that felt like a mixture of something cold and structured and informative as well as being soft and self-reflective.”

The selected piece, titled “Warp Time With Warp Self, No.2,” blends futuristic elements like numbers and data with a more introspective visual layer. Gabriel noted his appreciation for the way it juxtaposes analytical precision with a deeper, more personal dimension—an aesthetic that mirrors the emotional and conceptual tone of the song itself.
