Hunting For Shelter

British blues band Climax Blues Band wowed the Top of the Pops in ’76 with famous hit “Couldn’t Get It Right” with their signature deep vocals from original lead singer Collin Cooper and complimentary higher octave from the great bass player Derek Holt.

“But I kept on looking for a sign tn the middle of the night, but I couldn’t see the light. No, I couldn’t see the light, I kept on looking for a way to take me through the night…”

Inspired by life on the American road on the hunt for a place to stay for the night, namely a Holiday Inn, the band felt they were constantly searching for temporary homes throughout the long, lonely nights. We could only imagine what it feels like to visit town after town, spreading music and joy along the way- although we could picture it being quite rewarding, it must have gotten somewhat monotonous and possibly empty at times.

Interesting Fact: This was the first big hit for the Climax Blues Band, who had been recording since 1968 and released 8 previous albums.

This tune really brings us back to the simpler days with great music and good vibes, the Climax Blues Band, although they did not have several hits, really got this one right! The combative melody is one of our favorites! Enjoy!

+ Couldn’t Get It Right Lyrics +

Time was drifting
This rocker got to roll
So I hit the road and made my getaway
Restless feeling, really got a hold
I started searching for a better way

But I kept on looking for a sign
In the middle of the night
But I couldn’t see the light
No, I couldn’t see the light
I kept on looking for a way
To take me through the night
I couldn’t get it right
I couldn’t get it right

LA fever made me feel alright
But I must admit it got the best of me
Getting down, so deep I could have drowned
Now, I can’t get back the way I used to be

But I kept on looking for a sign
In the middle of the night
But I couldn’t see the light
No, I couldn’t see the light
I kept on looking for a way
To take me through the night
I couldn’t get it right
I couldn’t get it right

New York City took me with the tide
And I nearly died from hospitality
Left me stranded, took away my pride
Just another no account fatality

But I kept on looking for a sign
In the middle of the night
But I couldn’t see the light
No, I couldn’t see the light
I kept on looking for a way
To take me through the night
I couldn’t get it right
I couldn’t get it right
