The Box Tops Perform #1 Hit “The Letter” Live, 1967
Lonely Days Are Gone
In 1967, The Box Tops took the world by storm with their hit “The Letter” reaching the #1 spot for four straight weeks.
“Lonely days are gone, I’m a-goin’ home. My baby, just-a wrote me a letter.”
The Box Tops were a Memphis rock group thats focus was mainly soul, with hints of pop. Under 2 minutes (we wish it was longer) this hit swept the nation in 1967 and brought The Box Tops nationwide fame quickly, selling over 4 million records and 2 Grammy award nominations.
Fun Fact: When the group recorded this they still did not have a name. One band member suggested, “Let’s have a contest and everybody can send in 50 cents and a box top.” Producer Dan Penn then dubbed them The Box Tops.
In this video you will see an “out of it” Alex Chilton, lead singer of the Box Tops, perform a hilarious lip-sync attempt to his hit song. Considering this is quite old and rare footage, at some point the camera cuts out and becomes shaky before the song ends so beware.
This tune brings back such great memories… Enjoy!

give me a ticket for an airoplane
i ain’t got time to take no fast train
oh ,the lonely days are gone
i’ll be right home
my baby she wrote me a letter
i don’t care how much money i got to spend
i won’t find my way home again
oh the lonely days are gone
