The Allman Brothers Band – “Ramblin’ Man”

“Lord, I Was Born A Ramblin’ Man…”

Named after the 1951 classic by Hank Williams, The Allman Brothers Band wrote their hit song ‘Ramblin’ Man’ in 1972 and featured it on their album Brothers and Sisters. It was one of the first without late guitarist Duane Allman, and proved without a doubt that The Allman Brothers Band could and would be successful without such a major part of their sound.

This was one of bassist Berry Oakley’s last contributions to the band. He would be killed shortly thereafter in a tragic motorcycle crash, just three blocks from that which took the life of Duane Allman.

‘Ramblin’ Man’ is such an American classic – maybe that’s why over the course of a nearly 50 year legacy, The Allman Brothers Band is heralded as the standard in Southern rock. There wasn’t a Southern rock band around at the same time or after them that wasn’t directly affected by The Allman Brothers Band’s tremendous success in bringing their Southern roots to rock and roll – where they clearly belong!

+ Ramblin’ Man lyrics +

Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man,
Tryin’ to make a livin’ and doin’ the best I can.
And when it’s time for leavin’,
I hope you’ll understand,
That I was born a ramblin’ man.

Well my father was a gambler down in Georgia,
He wound up on the wrong end of a gun.
And I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus
Rollin’ down highway 41.

Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man,
Tryin’ to make a livin’ and doin’ the best I can.
And when it’s time for leavin’,
I hope you’ll understand,
That I was born a ramblin’ man.

I’m on my way to New Orleans this mornin’,
Leaving out of Nashville, Tennessee,
They’re always having a good time down on the bayou,
Lord, them Delta women think the world of me.

Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man,
Tryin’ to make a livin’ and doin’ the best I can.
And when it’s time for leavin’,
I hope you’ll understand,
That I was born a ramblin’ man.

Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man
Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man
Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man
Lord, I was born a ramblin’ man
