Stevie Nicks has had an illustrious career spanning over 50 years, leaving a significant mark on the music world with her distinctive voice and style. Her journey began at a young age, as she started singing and writing her own songs. Her passion for music deepened when she received her first guitar as a teenager, paving the way for her to create her unique musical universe. With each song she wrote and each note she sang, Nicks laid the groundwork for what would become a legendary career.

Before she crossed paths with Lindsey Buckingham, who would become her emotional and musical partner, Nicks was part of a folk rock band. During this time, she honed her craft and blended her creativity with the works of other successful musicians. While the rock scene was dominated by male artists, Nicks stood out with her ambition to be remembered as a powerful female vocalist. She looked up to Grace Slick and Janis Joplin and aspired to leave a lasting musical impact just like they did.

Nicks admired these two female rock icons deeply. Reflecting on her early inspirations, she said, “I was going to keep up with the rock stars of the world that were men because there weren’t very many women once. Janis was really the last, and Grace is still alive, so. But music, Grace Slick and Janis Joplin were the ones that I loved. I wanted to be like them.” Nicks wanted to make a name for herself and be seen as a passionate artist who could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the greats. She knew she had what it took to carve out a place for herself in the male-dominated rock scene.

In addition to her love for rock, Nicks also had a strong connection to country music. She believed that she could always transition to country music later in her career. As she put it, “I knew from a little girl that I could do country my whole life. So I knew if I wanted to rock, I could rock now until I’m too tired to rock, and then I could slip gracefully into the country.” This foresight showed her deep understanding of her abilities and versatility as an artist.

As a proud female rock musician, Nicks has remained dedicated to her craft and never lost faith in herself. She committed, alongside her Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie, to work hard to elevate women in the music industry. Nicks has not only achieved her goal but has also inspired a new generation of female artists across genres. Artists like Lorde have looked up to her as a trailblazer who opened doors for women in rock and beyond. Initially wanting to emulate Janis Joplin and Grace Slick, Nicks has herself become a symbol of strength and inspiration for countless musicians.
