“I’m a King Bee” was written and originally recorded by James Moore aka Slim Harpo. This swamp blues song was released in 1957 and has then since been performed and covered by several music artists. Slim Harpo was also a big favorite of Mick Jagger.

In 2008, Slim Harpo’s “I’m a King Bee” received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, which “honor[s] recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance”.

The Rolling Stones recorded a version which faithfully followed the original. It was featured in their debut album released in 1964 but they have already been playing it during their concerts in 1963. Though it had the exact arrangement, several people would prefer their version over Slim Harpo’s.

Later, Mick Jagger commented “What’s the point in listening to us doing ‘I’m a King Bee’ when you can hear Slim Harpo do it?”

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry rocked this song during the “Lightning In a Bottle” blues tribute concert held in 2004. What a performance!
