Steve Perry stands out.

46 all-star vocalists participated in recording the biggest charity single of all time, “We Are the World” as an them for USA for Africa back in 1985.

Out of 46 vocalists, 21 were chosen to sing solos in the 7-minute long track. Journey‘s very own Steve Perry was one of the lucky 21 singers along with prominent industry names such as Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper, and Bruce Springsteen. Of course, the two co-writers of the song, Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson would get first bids on solos.

Perry was personally invited by Lionel Richie to join the magical dream team of popular vocalists. He was on a break from Journey during that time, and was out with a solo album “Street Talk”. Richie wanted a “step-out” moment for Perry.

Watch him belt out his sky-soaring solo during a behind-the-scenes shoot of the music video.
