Not Your Usual Holiday Song

Elton John released the single “Step into Christmas” on November 23, 1973 with “Ho, Ho, Ho (Who’d Be a Turkey at Christmas)” on the B-side. Although it didn’t crack the top 20 on the UK Singles Chart and Cash Box Top 100, it did top the Billboard Christmas Singles.

“Step into Christmas” fits perfectly with the entire catalog during the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road era. It may be overshadowed by other Elton John classics but it’s clearly a musical gem. Even though it’s holiday-themed, it’s one of his best songs – catchy, irresistible, and uplifting. There’s no way you can listen to this and not feel a bit of happiness which is what Christmas is about.

From the melody to the harmonies, it’s stellar and magical. And let’s not even forget Elton John’s infectious energy. Unfortunately, although it charted when it first came out, it has been largely forgotten which is seriously unfair. It deserves a listen or two. In fact, we’d listen to it all-year long if we could. Some Christmas tunes make you feel wistful, nostalgic, or even sad. But this one, it sparks joy.

If you want to get into the holiday spirit, this should be at the top of your playlist.
