Ronnie Wood, after battling drug and alcohol issues for years, has discovered a new way to get his highs – and it’s not what you might expect.
As the Rolling Stones hit the road for their latest tour, Wood finds himself rejuvenated after intense rehearsals in Los Angeles spanning over five weeks. With more than 20 shows lined up across the U.S. until July 17 in support of their latest album, Hackney Diamonds, Wood reflects on the band’s return to stadium performances.
In a departure from the rock ‘n’ roll excesses of yesteryears, Wood’s backstage routine now involves green juices and light workouts with a trainer to maintain his circulation – a necessity, he admits, as he embraces his senior years. Amidst the hustle and bustle of tour life, he finds solace in quieter moments, indulging in the Netflix series Ripley.
But for Wood, the real thrill comes from being back onstage. At 76, he attests that the rush of adrenaline from performing surpasses any substance-induced high he’s experienced in the past. For him, the natural high of live performance reigns supreme.
A Bond with Paul McCartney Flourishes
During rehearsals, Wood and his bandmates had the pleasure of spending quality time with Paul McCartney, whose collaboration on “Bite My Head Off” from Hackney Diamonds added an extra spark to the album. McCartney’s presence was not only supportive but also creatively inspiring, offering valuable input to the Rolling Stones.
In a heartwarming gesture, McCartney even threw a farewell party for Wood and his wife, Sally, before they departed from Los Angeles, with Neil Young making a surprise appearance. The reunion with Young, an old friend, was a cherished moment, and plans are in place to reconvene at the New Orleans Jazz Festival in Louisiana, highlighting the enduring camaraderie shared among music legends.
