Robert Plant has been announced as the latest recipient of the Record Store Legend award, an honour bestowed by Record Store Day in recognition of his enduring influence on music and his unwavering support for independent record shops and emerging artists.
A Champion of Record Store Culture
Throughout his career, Plant has remained closely tied to the culture of independent record stores. From frequent visits to The Groove Records in Stourbridge to memories of browsing chart shops in the 1960s, his connection to physical music spaces has been a constant.
In more recent years, the former Led Zeppelin frontman has continued to engage with the community, including a 2020 question-and-answer session at Rough Trade East alongside broadcaster Matt Everitt. His ongoing presence highlights a genuine commitment to preserving the role of record stores in modern music culture.
The Meaning Behind the Music
Speaking at Spillers Records in Cardiff—widely recognised as the oldest record shop in the world—Plant reflected on the significance of the award and his personal relationship with physical music formats.
“Record stores have always been a part of my life,” he said. “For me, once you get to the physical record, it’s because you really want to know and be a part of what the artist was considering.”
He continued:
“And I know, as a guy who’s been making records since 1966, people want to take home something very special, to enjoy all the elements of what an artist has put together. We want a connection between the music and the art of the whole thing.”
Honouring Legacy at a Historic Venue
The ceremony at Spillers Records served as a fitting backdrop for the occasion. A commemorative plaque was unveiled to celebrate Plant’s artistic contributions, his connection to the shop, and the cultural landscape that has influenced his songwriting.
A press statement noted that the installation “highlights his ongoing support for record stores as cultural hubs which champion music and community, inviting fans to visit and share in their own love of music.”
Ashli Todd of Spillers Records praised Plant’s enduring curiosity, stating:
“Record shops of the world will know first-hand that above all, Robert Plant is a connoisseur of his craft whose appetite for musical discoveries has not waned with the passage of time.”
Plant joins a distinguished list of previous honourees, including Elton John, recognised in 2017, and Johnny Marr, who received the accolade last year.
To mark the occasion, Plant will release a Record Store Day exclusive, Saving Grace: All That Glitters, following his recent critically acclaimed album Saving Grace. Both releases feature vocalist Suzi Dian and the Saving Grace band.
The 19th annual Record Store Day will take place on April 18, 2026, with thousands of independent record shops worldwide participating through live events, special releases, and in-store celebrations.
