Rob Trujillo Explains Why Metallica Is Better Than Guns N’ Roses | Society Of Rock Videos

At a recent Q&A session during the Metallica: The Black Album in Black & White book signing at Bio Rex, Rob Trujillo shared insights about his early days with Metallica and his experiences with the band. Reflecting on his initial tours, Trujillo revealed an intriguing comparison between Metallica and Guns N’ Roses.

Trujillo described his first encounters with Metallica as significantly more enjoyable than those with Guns N’ Roses. He elaborated:

“In ’93 in Europe, we were actually going back and forth between Metallica and Guns N’ Roses. We’d do two weeks with Metallica, and then two weeks with Guns N’ Roses. Our two weeks with Metallica were — no disrespect to Guns N’ Roses — but man, way better, way funner, better for us, better crowd.”

A Surprising Stage Moment

Recalling an unexpected incident during one of the Guns N’ Roses shows, Trujillo shared a humorous anecdote.

“I remember one show, somebody threw a sandwich, and it hit me. I got really mad, and then Mike [Muir, Suicidal Tendencies frontman] and I went out into the crowd of 40,000 people to try and beat somebody up that we couldn’t find. But all of a sudden, we were signing autographs, and it’s like, ‘Wait a minute. We’re supposed to be pissed off.’ So, it was weird.”

Trujillo also discussed the unique connection Metallica has with its fans.

“There were good days and bad days. But it’s always great to do these kinds of tours anyway, ’cause you’re connecting with new fans. But the Metallica fans were more kind of in our wheelhouse. Guns N’ Roses was huge back then, so we had to take that tour. It was a great experience.”

Trujillo Embraces His Role

Initially joining Metallica as a touring bassist, Trujillo eventually became an official member of the band. Reflecting on his role, he emphasized that he never felt pressured by comparisons to previous bassists. In a 2016 interview with Exclaim!, he stated:

“Whether it’s Jason or myself or Cliff, we’re all different types of players coming from different places, but delivering what is best for the band. That’s all I ever do, just try and do the best I can and cater to the song, cater to the music.”
