At 81 years old, Paul Simon continues to create music that inspires him and adds to his extensive collection of songs spanning nearly 60 years. His latest work, Seven Psalms, set to be released on May 19, comprises seven tracks with a total runtime of 33 minutes.

The album is meant to be listened to as a continuous piece. It features Simon’s vocals, guitar, and other acoustic instruments, strings, a chorus of voices from the British vocal ensemble VOCES8, and singer/songwriter Edie Brickell. The cover art for the album features a portion of Thomas Moran’s landscape painting “Two Owls.”

Described as a return to the origins of folk music with influences from “King David’s Psalms,” Seven Psalms is a unique and moving musical experience that defies categorization. Produced by Simon and collaborator Kyle Crusham, Seven Psalms is Simon’s latest musical offering and his first release of new music since his 2018 album, In the Blue Light.

About The Concert

Simon, a 12-time Grammy winner, was recently honored in a televised concert called Homeward Bound: A Grammy Salute to the Songs of Paul Simon, which took place on Dec. 21, 2022.

The concert featured performances by various artists, including Stevie Wonder, Sting, Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, Rhiannon Giddens, Eric Church, The Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs, and the Jonas Brothers, among others.

From Words To Music

Simon’s songwriting process is highly artistic and intricate, with him becoming lost in the melodies and chords before the lyrics emerge. He noted in the interview that he typically starts with a simple riff or chord pattern on his guitar. The lyrics emerge organically as he performs and experiments with various musical concepts. The music acts as a guide, setting the tone and mood for the lyrics.

His technique is heavily influenced by rhythm. He pays great attention to their cadence and flow to guarantee that the lyrics flow well with the music. He also believes that the lyrics’ rhythm can considerably impact the emotional impact and resonance of a song, adding depth and nuance to the overall composition.

His work typically tackles the theme of love, but he also looks at family issues, societal commentary, and the passage of time. He regularly draws from his own experiences and observations of the world around him to infuse his music with insightful reflections about life, love, and the human condition.

Simon admits that his view on specific concerns, such as aging, has evolved as he has matured as an artist. His songs usually reflect the wisdom and insight that come with experience as he navigates life’s challenges and looks at the world’s developing dynamics. His songwriting has the ability to generate a sense of affection in listeners of all ages and backgrounds.
