Patrick Muldoon, Soap and TV Star, Dies Suddenly at Age 57
Sudden Loss in the Entertainment World
A wave of shock spread through the entertainment industry on April 19 after reports confirmed that actor Patrick Muldoon had died earlier that same day. His representative verified the news to Variety, leaving fans stunned by the unexpected passing of a familiar television face. Early reports point to a heart attack, described as sudden and without warning.
Family accounts later shared more detail about his final morning. Muldoon reportedly began the day in a normal routine, sharing coffee with his partner Miriam Rothbart before heading to the shower. When he stayed inside the bathroom longer than expected, concern grew. Rothbart went to check on him and discovered he was unresponsive. Emergency services were called immediately, but medical efforts were unable to bring him back.
A Career Built on Soap and Screen Work
Patrick Muldoon, born in San Pedro, California in 1968, began acting early and quickly found success in television. He made history in his twenties as the first actor to play Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives, a role he held from 1992 to 1995 before returning again years later from 2011 to 2012.
In the 1990s, he also became a recognizable presence on Melrose Place, portraying Richard Hart for three seasons. That role helped solidify his status in mainstream television drama during the peak of the soap era.

Beyond Soap Operas: Film, Music, and New Projects
Muldoon’s career extended far beyond daytime television. He appeared in a wide range of productions, including the 1997 sci-fi film Starship Troopers alongside Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien. His credits also included Saved by the Bell, Marlowe, A Boyfriend for Christmas, A Christmas Reunion, Arkansas, and Blackwood.
He also pursued music, releasing tracks such as I Believe and Gray Again, showing another side of his creative work. Even in later years, he stayed active in the industry. A crime thriller titled Dirty Hands was scheduled for release soon, and he had also taken on a co-executive producer role for the upcoming film Kockroach, which stars Chris Hemsworth, Taron Egerton, Zazie Beetz, and Alec Baldwin and was filmed in Australia. Just days before his death, he posted about the project and expressed excitement, marking his final social media update.
Tributes and Family Left Behind
Those close to him described a man known for warmth, generosity, and a strong connection with both people and animals. Friends often recalled his ability to make others feel seen and comfortable, along with a lively, energetic personality that carried through his life and career.
He is survived by his partner Miriam Rothbart, his parents Deanna and Patrick Muldoon Sr., his sister Shana Zappa, brother-in-law Ahmet Zappa, and his niece and nephew, Halo Zappa and Arrow Zappa.
