Ten Years After’s legendary performance at Woodstock is often hailed as one of the festival’s standout moments. Yet, until now, their entire show had never been released as a stand-alone record. On August 16, just one day before the 55th anniversary of their historic performance, the complete hour-long concert will be available as a one-CD, two-LP set titled Woodstock 1969.
Led by the dynamic Alvin Lee, the British blues rock band had already released two studio albums and a live record by the time they took the stage at Bethel, New York, on August 17, 1969, at 8:15 p.m. A few weeks after their Woodstock appearance, they released their third album, Ssssh, which became their first Top 10 U.S. hit.
Their set-closing performance of “I’m Going Home,” nearly 10 minutes long, was immortalized in the No. 1 album Woodstock: Music From the Original Soundtrack and More in 1970, as well as in the acclaimed documentary released the same year.
What to Expect from Ten Years After’s ‘Woodstock 1969’ Album
While the full Woodstock performance of Ten Years After was included in the 2019 release Woodstock – Back to the Garden: The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive, a 38-CD set that featured all songs from the iconic festival, the upcoming Woodstock 1969 marks the first time the band’s complete set is available as a stand-alone album.
The newly restored and mixed concert from the original 2″ multitrack tapes features a powerful setlist. It includes the band’s set-opening cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Spoonful,” two renditions of Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl,” an expansive 18-minute version of Al Kooper’s “I Can’t Keep From Crying Sometimes,” and the epic closing track “I’m Going Home,” originally found on their 1968 live album Undead.
This release offers fans a chance to experience Ten Years After’s electrifying Woodstock performance in its entirety, capturing a pivotal moment in rock history. As the anniversary approaches, Woodstock 1969 stands as the band’s unforgettable contribution to one of the most famous music festivals of all time.
