Rocker Jon Bon Jovi is grieving the loss of his mother, Carol Bongiovi, who passed away on Tuesday at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey, just three days before her 84th birthday.
“Her spirit and can-do attitude shaped this family. She will be greatly missed,” Bon Jovi said in a heartfelt statement released on behalf of his family. He described his mother as “a force to be reckoned with.”
Carol Bongiovi, born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania, was more than just the mother of a rock star. She founded the official fan club for Bon Jovi’s iconic band, was an entrepreneur, and was a U.S. Marine veteran. It was during her service that she met her future husband, John Bongiovi Sr. The couple eventually settled in Sayreville, New Jersey, where they raised their family.
Carol is survived by her husband of 63 years, three sons and their wives: Jon Bon Jovi and Dorothea, Anthony and Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Matthew and Desiree Bongiovi. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren.
This tragic news comes on the heels of a joyous event for the Bon Jovi family. Less than two months ago, Jon Bon Jovi’s 22-year-old son, Jake Bongiovi, married Millie Bobby Brown. The rocker confirmed the couple’s intimate wedding during an interview with BBC’s The One Show in May.
Bon Jovi shared:
“They’re great, they’re absolutely fantastic.
“It was a very small family wedding, and the bride looked gorgeous. Jake is happy as can be.”
In April, Bon Jovi expressed his admiration for his new daughter-in-law in an interview with The Times of London. He said:
“I’ve gotten to know her in the last year, she works really hard, and she and Jake will grow together in their own way.
“With the support of family around them, they’re gonna be great together.”
Jon Bon Jovi’s acceptance of his son’s young marriage is rooted in his own experience. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothea, in a spontaneous Las Vegas elopement in 1989. The couple has since welcomed four children.
As Jon Bon Jovi mourns his mother’s passing, he also cherishes the strength and influence she had on his life and career, remembering her as a pivotal force within their family.
