Fourteen years have passed since Whitney Houston, one of music’s most celebrated voices, was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel room. Her powerful vocals and chart-topping hits continue to influence generations of singers, even as fans remember the tragic circumstances of her final day. Houston, known worldwide as “The Voice,” died on February 11, 2012, one day before the Grammy Awards, leaving behind her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, who would tragically die three years later at age 22.
Hailed for her extraordinary vocal range and emotional delivery, Houston’s career spanned decades and produced hits like “I Will Always Love You,” “Greatest Love of All,” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” By the time of her death, she was also known for her struggles with drug addiction, a battle portrayed in the 2022 biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

Circumstances Surrounding Her Death
According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s report, Houston’s death was ruled an accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors. The 42-page report noted the presence of multiple substances in her system, including marijuana, Xanax, Benadryl, and Flexeril. However, these did not contribute to her death.
Los Angeles County chief coroner Craig Harvey explained, “There was water found in her lungs that indicated to us that she was alive when she was submerged underwater. According to our tests, the level of cocaine was not necessarily a lethal level of cocaine. But her death was complicated by chronic cocaine use and heart disease.”
Ed Winter, assistant chief coroner, added, “She could’ve passed out first due to the intoxication from the cocaine, or she could’ve had a heart attack and then drowned. It’s probably one of those two scenarios.”
Where It Happened
Houston was found unresponsive in the bathtub of Suite 434 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Reports indicate she had spoken with her mother, Cissy Houston, at 3:15 p.m. that day and appeared fine. Less than half an hour later, hotel security was called after her assistant discovered her unresponsive in the bathtub at 3:43 p.m. Police arrived two minutes later and attempted CPR, but Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m.
In the hours before her death, Houston had been attending pre-Grammy activities. On February 9, she visited singers Brandy and Monica during their rehearsals for Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party. Later that evening, she performed her final public performance with Kelly Price, singing “Jesus Loves Me” at a Hollywood event.
Public Reaction and Tributes
News of Houston’s death shocked fans and fellow musicians worldwide. Clive Davis, Houston’s longtime friend and mentor, addressed guests at his pre-Grammy party at the Beverly Hilton, despite Houston’s body remaining in the hotel until after midnight. He said, “By now you have all learned of the unspeakably tragic news of our beloved Whitney’s passing. I don’t have to mask my emotion in front of a room full of so many dear friends.”
Davis continued, “I am personally devastated by the loss of someone who has meant so much to me for so many years. Whitney was so full of life. She was so looking forward to tonight even though she wasn’t scheduled to perform. Whitney was a beautiful person and a talent beyond compare. She graced this stage with her regal presence and gave so many memorable performances here over the years. Simply put, Whitney would have wanted the music to go on and her family asked that we carry on.”
