New Trademark Filing Hints at Neal Schon’s Next Move for Journey

Neal Schon’s concept for a new project titled Journey Beyond is beginning to take shape, as new information surfaces through filings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The Journey co-founder initially submitted paperwork indicating the name would be used for audio and video recordings, but recently released documents suggest broader ambitions for the project.

Updated filings show that Schon is exploring the possibility of taking Journey Beyond on tour, while also developing a line of related merchandise.

These developments arrive as Schon faces an uncertain road ahead while Journey continues its ongoing Final Frontier Tour. Outside of the formal paperwork, however, the guitarist has revealed very little publicly, leaving fans to speculate about what the future may hold.

Trademark Filing Suggests Plans for Live Performances

Schon first teased the name by sharing an image featuring the words Journey Beyond on social media and tagging posts with the phrase. Still, he has remained guarded when discussing the idea in interviews.

Trademark filings now provide more insight. Documents published in the federal Trademarks Official Gazette list “live performances by a musical group” among the intended uses for the Journey Beyond name. The application was also revised to include the wording “featuring music” in reference to both physical and digital releases.

Who might join Schon under the Journey Beyond banner remains unclear.

Speculation increased after the guitarist made several appearances ahead of the current tour alongside fellow Journey members — drummer Deen Castronovo, bassist Todd Jensen, and second keyboardist Jason Derlatka. When Rolling Stone asked whether Journey might eventually transition into Journey Beyond, Schon offered a cautious response.

“Well, who knows?” he said. “Nothing is set in stone right now until I actually get there.”

Trademark Challenge and Merchandising Plans

Additional paperwork indicates that Schon intends to expand the Journey Beyond brand beyond music and touring. The filing lists apparel items including shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and socks, later clarifying that all merchandise would be connected to a musical group.

The trademark process also encountered a brief obstacle. Genesco Brands, which owns the Journeys clothing trademark, requested an extension to review the application during the standard 30-day opposition window after the mark appeared in the Official Gazette.

That extension has now expired without further filings, suggesting the challenge has not moved forward.

Steve Perry Shuts Down Reunion Rumors

Meanwhile, Journey’s Final Frontier Tour, which launched in late February, has already reached Canadian dates. Early in the tour, fans speculated that former singer Steve Perry might appear as a special guest.

Keyboardist Jonathan Cain revealed in a Feb. 19 interview that Schon had reached out to Perry about the possibility.

“He says [Perry’s] thinking about it,” Cain said at the time. “I hope he comes out. It’s never too late.”

Perry quickly dismissed the rumors later that same day through a message on social media.

“While I’m always grateful for the love people still have for Journey,” Perry wrote, “the rumors about me rejoining the band are simply not true and I want to gently put them to rest.”

Perry was the voice behind Journey’s most commercially successful era, including the blockbuster 1981 album Escape, which surpassed the band’s previous releases in sales. After the group split not long after that period, the classic lineup reunited once more for 1998’s Trial by Fire, though a full-scale reunion tour never materialized.

In the years since, Journey has continued with a rotating lineup of vocalists before ultimately finding long-term stability with Arnel Pineda, now the band’s longest-serving frontman. With Pineda, the group released three studio albums, including 2008’s platinum-selling Revelation, proving the band’s enduring appeal even decades after its initial peak.

As Journey presses forward on its current tour and Schon quietly develops the Journey Beyond concept, the next chapter of the guitarist’s storied career remains one that fans are watching closely.
