T For Texas

“Don’t let that flag hit the ground”  – Ronnie Van Zant

Just before Skynyrd started set “T For Texas” at Knebworth, Ronnie made sure to represent his country, pride and heart all in just one simple sentence. Playing the Jimmie Rodger’s hit from he 20’s, Lynyrd Skynyrd represents the greatest country in the world all the way in Knebworth, England.

Jimmie Rodger’s “T For Texas,” also known as “The First Blue Yodel” was written and recorded in November 1927. This established the American “blue yodel” as the first of its time that was based on the 12-bar blues format and featured Rodgers’ trademark yodel refrains. As the great guy that Ronnie was, he recognized the milestones that Rodgers created with his music and wanted to pay tribute to him all the way across the world by sharing this song.

Interesting Fact: Ronnie Van Zant wrote most of their lyrics, but usually didn’t write them down. He would come to the studio with them in his head.

Just one year before the untimely and infamous plane crash, Ronnie and the boys rocked Knebworth this American classic with pride, honor and humility and we couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this country. Enjoy!

+ T For Texas Lyrics +

Give me a T for Texas, give me a T for Tennessee
Give me a T for Texas, give me a T for Tennessee
Give me a T for Thelma, woman made a fool out of me

If you don’t want me baby, mama you sure don’t got to stall
If you don’t want me baby, mama you sure don’t got to stall
I’ve had more pretty women than a passenger train could haul

I’m gonna buy myself a shotgun, one with a long shiny barrel
I’m gonna buy myself a shotgun, one with a long shiny barrel
I’m gonna shoot me a rounder oh that stole away my gal

I’d rather drink your muddy water, sleep down in a hollow log
I’d rather drink your muddy water, sleep down in a hollow log
Than to be in Atlanta, Georgia, treat me like a dirty dog
(I don’t have to go for that)

If you don’t want me baby, mama you sure don’t got to stall
If you don’t want me baby, mama you sure don’t got to stall
‘Cause I’ve had more pretty women than a passenger train could haul
And that ain’t all

I’d rather drink your muddy water, sleep down in a hollow log
I’d rather drink your muddy water, sleep down in a hollow log
Than to be in Atlanta, Georgia, treated like a dirty dog

Oh Give me a T for Texas, give me a T for Tennessee
Give me a T for Thelma, woman made a fool out of me
Give me a T for Texas, give me that T for Tennessee
Give me a T for Thelma, woman made a fool out of me
One more time

Give me a T for Thelma, oh that woman made a fool…
I said said oh, that woman made a fool
Out of me, yeah
