Journey has just shared their first single in a decade – “The Way We Used To Be” which will appear on their upcoming LP, the follow-up to 2011’s Eclipse. They previously dropped a 26-second clip to tease its music video. This also serves as the debut of their new lineup which now includes drummer Narada Michael Walden, returning bassist Randy Jackson, and keyboardist Jason Derlatka, in addition to Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, and Arnel Pineda.
“[This song] came out of one of the many loops Iโd written while the long downtime continued with the pandemic we all had to deal with,” Schon said in a press release. “So utilizing my time and trying to keep fans in touch I started posting many jams and loops I created very quickly most every day.”
“On โThe Way We Used To Beโ I laid down the keyboard loop with over-dubbed rhythm and a little blues lead guitar and sent to Jonathan,” he added. “He sent it back very shortly after with demo vocals and lyrics and I said to myself with a smile, ‘Weโve still got it!'”
“I felt Jonathan nailed the lyrics and melody with haunting chorus โgot to get backโ โ โto the way we used to be.โ So this was the complete new beginning chapter for Journey โ many more follow the same sequence with all of us collectively writing and working together,” Schon continued. “We now have over 26 songs that weโve written and whittling it down to 10 or 12. We are very excited by all the new musical endeavors weโve created together looking forward to getting back on the road to you.”
It’s been challenging to make new music because Journey members are scattered in different parts of the globe. But somehow, they made it work. Check out the song below.
