Watch legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell made an unexpected appearance at the Hollywood Bowl, joining Brandi Carlile and other guests on stage for an intimate and soul-stirring performance. This unexpected event marked another milestone in Mitchell’s journey back to the stage, four months after her official return.
The stage was set with the cozy atmosphere of “Joni Jams,” and Mitchell found herself seated centerstage alongside Carlile and fellow guest Annie Lennox.
The audience was treated not only to the magic of Mitchell’s music but also to about five minutes of engaging banter between Carlile and Mitchell. They discussed Mitchell’s recent trip to Canada, a significant moment for her as it was her first visit to her native country since her recovery from a brain aneurysm in 2015.
“Joni, it’s such a joy to be sitting here with you, thank you for doing this with me. You make me feel so cool,” Carlile told Mitchell. “I really owe you one, and I promise not to get to used to asking for favors.”
Even before Mitchell, renowned as Number Nine on Rolling Stone’s 250 Greatest Guitarists list, took the stage, her presence filled the Hollywood Bowl.
Carlile had earlier delivered a soulful cover of Mitchell’s iconic song “Woodstock,” adding a touch of reverence to the evening. The main portion of the show also featured stellar performances by Wendy & Lisa, Blake Mills, Lucius, Allison Russell, and more, making it a night to remember for all in attendance.
Mitchell’s performance on Saturday marked her first since her appearance at this summer’s Echoes Through the Canyon festival at Washington’s the Gorge Amphitheatre. This surprise on-stage reunion also coincided with the recent release of her much-anticipated collection, Archives — Volume 3: The Asylum Years (1972-1975), adding extra significance to this memorable evening for fans and fellow artists alike.
