Bitter and Nasty
Much has been said about John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s resentment and bitterness towards each other. Once upon a time, they worked together to create the greatest songs of the ’60s but towards the end of the decade and following The Beatles’ breakup, there were rumors and speculations about the status of their relationship especially since they’ve been trading barbs with their lyrics.
In a 2016 article onย Vanity Fair, the magazine revealed Lennon’s furious and scathing letter he sent to his former bandmate and his wife Linda. Oh and it was also up for bid at Bostonโs RR Auctions.
Although it’s undated, this was reportedly wrote and sent in 1971 in response to a prior correspondence from Linda where she told him not-so-pleasant things particularly about him not announcing publicly he was leaving The Beatles.
Part of Lennon’s missive reads: “I was reading your letter and wondering what middle aged cranky Beatle fan wrote it. I resisted looking at the last page to find outโI kept thinking who is itโQueen? Stuartโs mother?โClive Epsteinโs wife?โAlan Williams?โWhat the hellโitโs Linda!”
He added, “I was reading your letter and wondering what middle aged cranky Beatle fan wrote it. I resisted looking at the last page to find outโI kept thinking who is itโQueen? Stuartโs mother?โClive Epsteinโs wife?โAlan Williams?โWhat the hellโitโs Linda! . . . Lindaโ if you donโt care what I sayโshut up!โlet Paul writeโor whatever.”
The two-page letter sold for $29,843.45.
