Sundragon is thrilled to unveil the Super Dragon, a painstakingly recreated amplifier inspired by Jimmy Page’s legendary musical journey. This amp faithfully captures the essence of Page’s iconic sound during the recording of Led Zeppelin II in 1969 and remains a steadfast companion through all subsequent studio albums.
Building on the success of their faithful recreation of Page’s Led Zeppelin I recording amp, Sundragon proudly introduces the Super Dragon. According to Page, this amplifier is a true reflection of his “Number 1” amp, essential for translating the broad spectrum of sounds that have come to define rock guitar. Its significance lies not only in its volume and tone but in its ability to convey the subtleties of his guitar playing, both in the studio and on stage.
The Transformation of Super Bass Marshall
Page’s quest for the perfect amplifier led him to Tony Frank in the U.S., a skilled modifier of Marshall amps. Sending Frank his cherished 1968 Super Bass Marshall, the resulting modification enhanced the amp’s dynamic range, solidifying its role as Page’s go-to choice for live performances and studio recordings from Led Zeppelin II onwards.
Limited to a mere 50 units, the Super Dragon half-stacks are meticulously handcrafted by Mitch Colby and the accomplished Sundragon team. Each unit is designed to replicate Jimmy’s distinctive sound with precision, featuring recreated transformers, New Old Stock GE 6550 tubes, Iskra and Allen Bradley resistors, Phillips “mustard” capacitors, and specially designed speakers and cabinets that authentically recreate the response and feel of Page’s original setup. To add a personal touch, every amplifier head will bear the signature of the maestro himself. (Tramadol)
The Super Dragon amplifiers are slated to hit the market in December 2023, with production continuing through mid-2024. This limited edition promises not only a glimpse into the past but a timeless experience for music enthusiasts seeking to immerse themselves in the unmistakable tones of Jimmy Page.
