Jason Isbell reworked Metallica’s “Sad But True” into a blues stomper. His version will be featured on Metallica’s 30th anniversary edition of their iconic Black Album titled The Metallica Blacklist, which is slated for release digitally on September 10 while the physical copies arrive on October 1.

Backed by 400 Unit, Isbell powered through the song like a madman. He traded licks with guitarist Sadler Vaden, and showed off his searing vocals. He completely overhauled the classic track, and it’s a must-listen.

Aside from Isbell’s cover, there are also two other versions of “Sad But True” from St. Vincent and English singer Sam Fender. They may be different but all three are absolutely addicting.

The Metallica Blacklist features covers from over fifty artists that include Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, J Balvin, Phoebe Bridgers, My Morning Jacket, Cage the Elephant, Kamasi Washington, Weezer, Mac DeMarco, and many more. 100% of the sales will go to charities of the artists’ choice. Miley Cyrus previous teased the collection with her take on “Nothing Else Matters” featuring Sir Elton John, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Yo-Yo Ma, and Robert Trujillo.

Aside from The Metallica Blacklist, the heavy metal titans are also prepping to reissue the Black Album in several packages including a limited edition super deluxe box set.
