Janis Outshines Big Brother & Holding Company In “Faster Than Sound”

Faster Than Sound?

In 1967, a young Janis Joplin, joined by her band Big Brother & Holding Company, played “Light Is Faster Than Sound” live. Although it is not one of our favorite songs, Janis still managed to shine, but made a good call departing from this group.

“Light is faster than sound, my head to the ground, mind going round, faster than sound…”

As Janis competes for the vocals in the song, it is clear that her talents were not being utilized in this group. By 1968, the band was known as Janis Joplin and Big Brother & Holding Company which generated deep resentment and issues between them.

Interesting Fact:  Time magazine called Joplin “probably the most powerful singer to emerge from the white rock movement.”

Just two years later Janis finally removed herself from the band to achieve her dreams as a solo artist and eventually tied herself to the Kozmic Blues Band, that supported her successful career and status.
