Lynyrd Skynyrd Twenty Tour, 1997
Inspired by a true story fueled by a night of champagne and brawling roadies, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “What’s Your Name” is one that never fails to get the crowd on its feet and roaring! Ronnie Van Zant could spin a story like no one else, writing lyrics that made you ache to have been a fly on the wall for the moment in his life that inspired it – and this Street Survivors classic is no different.
In 1997, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Lynyrd Skynyrd Twenty Tour took them to Pittsburgh’s Star Lake Coca-Cola Amphitheatre, later immortalized as both a live album and live concert film, where their show-stopping performance of “What’s Your Name” saw a sea of dedicated fans singing, dancing, and stomping right along with them as they’d done for over two decades.
Fun Fact: Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington wrote “What’s Your Name” while in Miami with producer Tom Dowd and Booker T. & the M.G.’s guitarist Steve Cropper.
Singer Johnny Van Zant remains one of our favorite rock and roll frontmen for his energy and passion, constantly engaging with the crowd and with his bandmates – while you see and hear shades of his big brother in his voice and stage presence, he is unique and brings an element of soul to Lynyrd Skynyrd that is uniquely his own. Guitarists Rickey Medlocke, Gary Rossington and the late Hughie Thomasson make up the band’s three pronged guitar attack; when highlighted by Billy Powell’s twinkling, soulful piano riff, “What’s Your Name” becomes a rollicking good time shared by all and something we can only describe as a high energy, explosive moment onstage for Jacksonville’s favorite sons.
Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd & Second Helping Live’ is available now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital formats – it’s the perfect gift for the Lynyrd Skynyrd fan in your life. Buy it here on Amazon!
+ What’s Your Name lyrics +
Well, its eight o’clock in Boise, Idaho
I’ll find my limo driver
Mister, take us to the show
I done made some plans for later on tonight
I’ll find a little queen
And I know I can treat her right
What’s your name, little girl?
What’s your name?
Shootin’ you straight, little girl?
Won’t you do the same?
Back at the hotel
Lord we got such a mess
It seems that one of the crew
Had a go with one of the guests, oh yes
Well, the police said we can’t drink in the bar, what a shame
Won’t you come upstairs girl
And have a drink of champagne
What’s your name, little girl?
What’s your name?
Shootin’ you straight, little girl?
For there ain’t no shame
What’s your name, little girl?
What’s your name?
Shootin’ you straight, little girl?
Won’t you do the same? Awh yeah
What’s your name, little girl?
What’s your name?
Shootin’ you straight, little girl?
Won’t you do the same?
Nine o’clock the next day
And I’m ready to go
I got six hundred miles to ride
To do one more show, oh no
Can I get you a taxi home
It sure was grand
When I come back here next year
I want to see you again
What was your name, little girl?
What’s your name?
Shootin’ you straight, little girl?
Well there ain’t no shame
What was your name, little girl?
What’s your name?
Shootin’ you straight, little girl?
Won’t you do the same? Woo
