“Bird Song” was another collaboration between Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia. It was first performed live at the Capitol Theater on February 19, 1971. It was included in the live album, “Reckoning” which was released on April 1, 1981 under Arista Records.
Hunter includes the dedication “…for Janis” with the lyric as it appears in Box of Rain.
It ranked at number 43 in the Pop Albums chart in 1981 and received a rating of four out of five stars from Allmusic. Jerry Garcia, being the lead guitarist, was loved by millions of fans because of his warmth and charisma. He was also an extremely talented songwriter.
Scorsese quoted “The Grateful Dead were more than just a band, they were their own planet, populated by millions of devoted fans. I’m very happy that this picture is being made and proud to be involved.”
