Grandma Jumps On Drums- She Must Have Played In A Rock n Roll Band Before
Wisconsin’s Mystery Grandma Drummer
At 63, Mary Hvizda is La Crosse, WI’s “Mystery Grandma Drummer”; the tiny, white haired woman who broke the internet when the guys at Coalition Drum Shop caught her on camera jamming The Surfaris’ ‘Wipeout’ on one of their drum kits. She’s absolutely adorable but more importantly, she’s actually pretty fantastic; while Mary was incredibly shy at the beginning of her journey to internet fame, never telling anyone her name or staying long enough for anyone to catch her on camera, it’s in this video that the world can finally see her shine.
Fun Fact: Mary began playing the drums at 15, playing in one of the first all-girl rock bands in Wisconsin! She retired in 1990 after her band broke up, and couldn’t find another to jam with.
The best part of this video is the brief moment where Mary hams it up for the camera, twirling her sticks before launching into a killer drum fill – what a lady! You go Mary, you’re an inspiration to anyone who’s ever wanted to rock! It’s easy to see why this has gone viral – she’s a real badass behind the kit and those mad drumming chops deserve some appreciation.
“It was like every weekend and sometimes it was like five nights a week, and all kind of locally you know, but I loved it. I couldn’t find no other bands to play with, and then I did quit.” – Mary Hvizda
And in case you’re wondering, yes she started playing the drums at a young age and she was in a few bands too. And unfortunately, she doesn’t have her own drum set anymore because she sold it. Several stations picked up on her story which made her an instant celebrity. She didn’t know much about the internet until she became a YouTube sensation!
