Skynyrd Goes…Classical?
One of the most beautiful songs in classic rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Freebird’ is a cultural staple; there’s no musician alive that doesn’t know it and in fact, the mark of a great musician is their ability to see the genius in what Ronnie Van Zant and the rest of Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote and find new and brilliant ways to share it with the world. Pianist Richard Blumenfeld saw that beauty, and capitalized on it when he delivered his piano cover of ‘Freebird’.
While Blumenfeld’s rendition was emotionally charged and reminded us of the immense gift brought to Lynyrd Skynyrd by late pianist Billy Powell, it was his unique and rowdy take on Allen Collins’ iconic solo that really kept us captivated!
Fun Fact: Lynyrd Skynyrd dedicated ‘Freebird’ to the memory of Duane Allman in all of their live shows. After the 1977 crash, it was dedicated to Ronnie, Cassie, Steve, and Dean.
Not only does he tear through the entirety of the solo, but he doesn’t miss a single note! How fantastic is that?
