Foghat’s new single “Black Days & Blue Nights” is a tribute to their original guitarist Rod Price, who passed away in 2005. The song is part of their album Sonic Mojo, which topped the Blues Albums chart in November last year. It’s not just another song for the band; it’s a way to remember Price and the impact he had on their music.
Drummer Roger Earl talks about Price’s struggle with the band’s hectic touring schedule back in the late ’70s. While Earl and their singer ‘Lonesome Dave’ Peverett loved being on the road, Price found it tough. But despite the challenges, Price’s guitar skills were unmatched, leaving a lasting impression on the band.
Current guitarist Bryan Bassett shares fond memories of touring with Price in the ’90s. He remembers how Price’s guitar playing inspired him and how they became good friends on the road. Price wasn’t just a great guitarist, he was also a great guy to hang out with.
Earl recalls Price’s audition for the band, where his slide guitar playing blew everyone away. Price’s unique style made him stand out, and it was clear to Earl and Peverett that he was the perfect fit for Foghat.
One special memory for Earl was when Price surprised him with a song he wrote called “What a Shame” during a fishing trip. It showed another side of Price’s talent as a songwriter, and it’s a memory Earl cherishes to this day.
Even though Price left Foghat, he continued making music with a new band called Nightwatch. Managed by Foghat’s manager Linda Earl, Nightwatch recorded some songs in the ’80s. Linda Earl hints that they might release these recordings in the future so that Price’s music can live on.
As Foghat continues to remember Price through their music, fans can expect more tributes to his legacy in the future. Price may be gone, but his influence on the band and their music will always be remembered.
