Fans Are Asking: Will Billy Joel Tour Again?

Nearly a year after stepping away from touring due to a serious health diagnosis, Billy Joel appears to be making encouraging progress in his recovery. According to his daughter, singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel, the legendary “Piano Man” is responding well to treatment and staying focused on improving his health.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alexa Ray shared that her father has been steadily working through physical therapy and maintaining a healthier lifestyle as he manages normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) — a rare neurological condition that can affect balance, hearing, and vision.

“He’s doing physical therapy regularly and he’s doing great. He’s lost weight as he’s on his diet,” she said. “I’m so proud of him. He’s such a trooper, so resilient and committed to being healthy and proactive. He’s a fighter. He’s always been a fighter and talks in his documentary about how life’s like a fight.”

Adjusting to Life After the Diagnosis

Joel’s last full concert took place in February 2025 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Shortly after the performance, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer initially postponed several tour dates for four months, explaining that he needed time for surgery and physical therapy to address an unspecified medical condition.

Two months later, the full picture emerged when Joel revealed that he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus. Doctors ultimately advised him to step away from touring altogether, noting that the physical strain of his live performances was worsening symptoms that included problems with balance, hearing, and vision.

Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, Joel himself has often downplayed the severity of the condition. During an appearance on Bill Maher’s Club Random Podcast last July, he spoke candidly about how he has been feeling since receiving the news.

“I feel good,” he said. “They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling.”

A Performer Who Never Fully Steps Away

Even while focusing on recovery, Joel’s connection to the stage has proven difficult to abandon completely. Earlier this year, fans were surprised when he made an unannounced appearance in Florida with the Billy Joel tribute band Turnstiles, joining them to perform “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and “Big Shot.”

“I wasn’t planning on working tonight,” Joel joked to the audience during the brief but memorable performance.

Alexa Ray also recalled the moment that first made her deeply concerned about her father’s health — a fall that occurred during his Mohegan Sun performance after he spun his microphone stand onstage. While Joel shrugged it off at the time, the video of the incident left a strong impression on her.

“He played it down,” she said. “He knows I have anxiety and am a neurotic worrier, so he was like, ‘Everything’s fine. It was just a little trip.’ When I saw the footage, I was crying. But then I went with him to the doctors, and we’re on top of everything. I just tell him to stay healthy.”

Though she recognizes that performing has always been central to Joel’s identity, she has encouraged him to approach any potential return to the stage more cautiously.

“Once a performer, always a performer!” she said. “But health comes first. I said, ‘If you’re going to perform again, please stay seated at the piano. No throwing the microphone stand around!’”

A Night of Tribute at Carnegie Hall

While Joel will not be performing at the Music of Billy Joel charity tribute concert at Carnegie Hall on March 12, the evening will still carry special meaning for the legendary songwriter. Alexa Ray will be there to perform in honor of her father, joining a lineup of artists celebrating his remarkable catalog.

She revealed that Joel had not originally planned to attend the event, but she quickly reminded him that a tribute at Carnegie Hall is not something to miss.

“Dad, you better be there! This is Carnegie Hall. Everyone’s paying tribute to you, and it’s an amazing group of artists,” she told him. “He was like, ‘Let me mark that down.’ He’s very organized with his little calendar.”

For Joel, the venue holds a deep personal connection. Performing at Carnegie Hall in the 1970s marked a major milestone early in his career, cementing his reputation as one of New York’s defining musical voices. Returning decades later — even as a guest rather than a performer — offers a full-circle moment that underscores the lasting impact of his work.

More than just a nostalgic appearance, the event serves as a reminder of the influence Joel continues to have across generations of musicians. Seeing fellow artists reinterpret his songs — and watching his own daughter carry that legacy forward on the same historic stage — highlights the enduring power of his music, even during a period when the man behind the piano is focusing on healing rather than headlining.
