If He Could Go Back, He Would Say No
Elton John recalled the moment he first “saw a line of cocaine” and admitted his regrets in taking too much drugs. He spent years trying to heal and recover from his substance abuse issues, which affected his career and almost cost him his life. He has always been open about his struggles with drugs and alcohol.
In a new interview posted by LADbible TV, John spoke to his collaborator Charlie Puth about regrets.
“Yeah, I wouldn’t have taken as many drugs,” John said. “Definitely not, although, I continued to work when I took drugs, [but] I didn’t make my best work some of the time. I never really wanted to take drugs, I just joined in for the sake of it and it became an addiction. I became an addict and alcoholic and I’ve since, you know, learned my lesson.”
“But I would if I could go back to when I first saw a line of cocaine I would say “no” now,” he continued.
In a separate interview with Variety, John looked back at his wild past.
“The life I was leading, flying on the Starship, living in beautiful houses, buying things left, right and center — it was not a normal life,” he admitted. “I used to have spasms and be found on the floor and they’d put me back to bed and half an hour later I’d be doing the same. It’s crazy.”
“I am a survivor. I’ve survived a lot of things,” he noted. “Life is full of pitfalls, even when you’re sober. I can deal with them now because I don’t have to run away and hide.”
