The iconic scaled-down version of Eddie Van Halen‘s Frankenstrat guitar, famously played by “Young Eddie” in Van Halen’s renowned music video for “Hot for Teacher,” is now available for purchase at a price of $219,875.
The seller on eBay, known as 1976vett2nv, confidently claims:
“You are looking at quite possibly the oldest piece of legitimate Van Halen memorabilia to ever go up for sale. Own yourself a true piece of Rock N’ Roll memorabilia that is museum-quality!”
This prop guitar is a miniature replica of Van Halen’s legendary red, black, and white Frankenstrat. In the music video for the hit song “Hot for Teacher,” released in 1984, child actor Bryan Hitchcock, who portrayed Young Eddie, can be seen casually lounging on a classroom desk with the guitar strapped over his shoulder. The instrument bears Van Halen’s signature, accompanied by the heartfelt message, “Thanks Bryan.”
Prospective buyers will also be enticed by the inclusion of additional memorabilia accompanying the guitar. The ensemble worn by Young Eddie in the music video, a collection of behind-the-scenes photos from the filming day, an original script, and items from the 1985 American Video Awards (where the video was nominated) are all part of the package.
While this particular guitar is deemed “non-playable,” it’s worth noting that the full-sized Frankenstrat guitar played by Van Halen in the music video recently fetched a staggering $3.9 million at auction.
The Young Eddie guitar has been offered for sale twice. The first time was in 2020 when the current seller acquired it from Hitchcock at an auction. More recently, the owner tried to sell the guitar on the reality TV show Pawn Stars. They were hoping to get $100,000, but pawn shop owner Corey Harrison made a counteroffer of $30,000. Ultimately, no agreement was reached.
