Earth, Wind and Fire joined the line of artists doing a lockdown version of their classic hits. They did a socially distanced performance of their 1974 song “Devotion” for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s #PlayAtHome series.
It’s pretty challenging since the group got together virtually, playing from their respective homes. But not surprisingly, they pulled it off flawlessly. Frontman Philip Bailey didn’t disappoint with his immaculate vocals. The result is a fun, entertaining, and magical performance that we just can’t get enough of.
Earth, Wind and Fire were scheduled to embark on a North American trek along with Santana this summer but like every other tour this year, it’s being moved to 2021 because of the global crisis. They still have a couple of dates which haven’t been rescheduled though and that includes two shows at the Pearl Concert Theater in Las Vegas on November.
“Devotion” was featured on their 1974 album, “Open Our Eyes.” Bailey told Rolling Stone, “Maurice’s whole vision was to kinda sneak a little jazz on people. So our mission, to bring melody/Ringing voices sing sweet harmony.”
It wasn’t a huge hit, peaking at #33 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #23 on the US Billboard Hot Soul Singles. Nevertheless, it has remained a fan favorite.
