Doyle Bramhall Remembers Friend Stevie Ray Vaughan With “Life By The Drop”

Doyle Bramhall Remembers Friend Stevie Ray Vaughan With “Life By The Drop” | Society Of Rock Videos

A Fond Memory Of A Good Friend

It’s impossible to hear Doyle Bramhall’s gritty rendition of ‘Life By The Drop’ without thinking of Stevie Ray Vaughan, whose 12-string acoustic rendition goes down as one of the simplest yet most poignant piece recorded during his relatively short career. One of Stevie’s oldest friends, Bramhall was an accomplished musician in his own right and collaborated with Stevie on some of his most iconic work, but it’s ‘Life By The Drop’ that remains one of the most special.

Fun Fact: Doyle was a childhood friend of Stevie and Jimmie Vaughan, playing the Austin blues circuit with the brothers. He’s even featured on the Vaughan brothers’ Family Style, playing the drums.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not about Stevie’s struggle with addiction – it’s Bramhall reflecting on his friendship with Stevie, telling their story from his perspective. While Stevie’s rendition of ‘Life By The Drop’ is soft, gentle, and almost shy compared to his usual over the top brand of guitar playing, it’s Doyle Bramhall’s rendition that stands out for its grittiness that contrasts nicely with his memories of his incredibly talented, self-effacing friend.

+ Life By The Drop lyrics +

Hello there, my old friend
Not so long ago it was ’til the end
We played outside in the pouring rain
On our way up the road, we started over again

You’re living a dream as though you’re on top
My mind is aching, Lord, it won’t stop
That’s how it happens living life by the drop

Up and down that road in our worn out shoes
Talking ’bout good thangs and signing the blues
You went your way and I stayed behind
We both knew it was just a matter of time

Living a dream as though you’re on top
My mind is aching, Lord, it won’t stop
That’s how it happens living life by the drop

No waste of time, we’re alive today
Turning up the past, there’s no easier way
Time’s been between us, a means to an end
God, it’s good to be here walking together, my friend

Living a dream, my mind starts thinking
That’s how it happens living life by the drop
That’s how it happens living life by the drop
That’s how it happens living life by the drop
