We Had No Time

Co-written by bandmates Coverdale and Blackmore, Deep Purple’s “Burn” has to be one of the greatest rock songs of all time. In our opinion, then recent lead singer David Coverdale is one of greatest frontman of this generation and is highly underrated; those piercing vocals get us every time.

Interesting Quote: “I was a complete unknown but I was involved in writing ‘Burn’ from the start. Ritchie was obviously the chief composer but I was given a cassette tape of the songs-in-progress and sent back to the north of England to work on the lyric with Glenn Hughes.” – David Coverdale

From their 8th studio album Burn, Deep Purple’s addition of Coverdale and Glen Hughes shifted them from hard/ heavy rock to more of a funk/ soul rock that showed a whole new, versatile side of the band. The dark, dense and gothic-like lyrics in the song speaks of witchcraft and its consequences back in the day; it is pretty much the soundtrack to the Salem Trials. Blackmore and Coverdale both had a similar fascination with the mystery of the Middle Ages and witchcraft.

As Coverdale throws the mic stand straight in the air and the crowd goes wild, it is evident that Deep Purple has a serious impact on the world at the time with their energy and music. Enjoy!

+ Burn Lyrics +

The sky is red, I don’t understand,
past midnight I still see the land.
People are sayin’ the woman is damned,
she makes you burn with a wave of her hand.
The city’s a blaze, the town’s on fire.
The woman’s flames are reaching higher.
We were fools, we called her liar.
All I hear is “Burn!”

I didn’t believe she was devil’s sperm.
She said, “Curse you all, you’ll never learn!
When I leave there’s no return.”
The people laughed till she said, “Burn!”
Warning came, no one cared.
Earth was shakin’, we stood and stared.
When it came no one was spared.
Still I hear “Burn!”

You know we had no time,
we could not even try.
You know we had no time.

You know we had no time,
we could not even try.
You know we had no time.

The sky is red, I don’t understand,
past midnight I still see the land.
People are sayin’ the woman is damned,
she makes you burn with a wave of her hand.
Warning came, no one cared.
Earth was shakin, we stood and stared.
When it came no one was spared.
Still I hear “Burn!”
