Bringing Blues To Britain

Dazzling the Royal Albert Hall yet again, Creedence Clearwater Revival puts on this awesome live performance of blues favorite “Midnight Special” that even Fogerty can’t help but stomp around to… It’s infectious and contagious!

“If you’re ever in Houston, well, you better do the right, you better not gamble, there, you better not fight, at all…”

Originally a 1936 Leadbelly tune, “Midnight Special” is that staple southern song that all blues admirers carry with them across the globe, inspired by the Southern Pacific Golden Gate Limited train.  The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the belief and reality of the train that brought hope and potential warm welcomes to the Texan prisoners it passed by in the night.

Interesting Fact: This was used as the theme to a popular TV show in the late 1970s called The Midnight Special. It was hosted by Robert Westin Smith, also known as the famous American DJ Wolfman Jack.

Although several artists have covered this over the years, CCR brought the southern rock that the story needed to kick it up a notch. We love that they brought it with them to Royal Albert Hall and shared its subtle, southern beauty to all of England with style and rock! Enjoy!

+ Midnight Special Lyrics +

Well, you wake up in the mornin’, you hear the work bell ring
And they march you to the table to see the same old thing
Ain’t no food upon the table, and no pork up in the pan
But you better not complain, boy, you get in trouble with the man

Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a everlovin’ light on me

Yonder come miss Rosie, how in the world did you know?
By the way she wears her apron, and the clothes she wore
Umbrella on her shoulder, piece of paper in her hand
She come to see the gov’nor, she wants to free her man

Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a everlovin’ light on me

If you’re ever in Houston, well, you better do the right
You better not gamble, there, you better not fight, at all
Or the sheriff will grab ya and the boys will bring you down
The next thing you know, boy, Oh! You’re prison bound

Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a everlovin’ light on me

Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
Let the Midnight Special shine a everlovin’ light on me
