Because It Just Isn’t Christmas Without It!

I don’t know about you, but it’s just not Christmas without Charles Brown’s ‘Please Come Home For Christmas’. I always smile the day after Thanksgiving when I hear him croon “Bells will be ringing…” for the first time all year and suddenly the world’s a little brighter, a little shinier, and before I know it I’m ready for Christmas! Written in 1960, ‘Please Come Home For Christmas’ carries a note of sadness; I mean after all, the narrator is lamenting love lost just before the most wonderful time of the year. However, as with most Christmas tunes, there’s a strong undercurrent of hope that what’s lost will again be found just in time for the ultimate in Christmas miracles.

Fun Fact: ‘Please Come Home For Christmas’ shot to the top of the charts and appeared on the Christmas Singles chart for nine seasons, hitting #1 in 1972.

Despite its sad undertones, it’s impossible to come down with a case of the blues when ‘Please Come Home For Christmas’ is playing, and even more so to go into the holiday season without it. Maybe it’s the fact that it contains key elements of most Christmas music, or maybe it’s just the fact that no matter who you are, this classic seems to call to mind fond memories of simpler times; in any event, it’s one that always manages to give people that warm and fuzzy feeling that we look forward to all year long!

+ Please Come Home For Christmas lyrics +

Bells will be ringing the glad glad news.
Oh, what a Christmas to have the blues.
My baby’s gone. I have no friends
To wish me greetings once again.
Choirs will be singing Silent Night.
Christmas carols by candlelight.
Please come home for Christmas.
Please come home for Christmas.
If not for Christmas, by New Year’s Night.

Friends and relations send salutations
Sure as the stars shine above,
Because it’s Christmastime, my dear.
The time of year to be with the one you love.

Dear, won’t you tell me you’ll never go wrong.
Christmas and New Year’s will find you home.
There’ll be no more sorrow, no grief and no pain,
‘Cause I’ll be happy, happy once again.

Mmmmm, no more sorrow, no grief and no pain,
‘Cause I’ll be happy Christmas once again.
