The Beatles give their final live performance atop the Apple building in London

We went on the roof in order to resolve the live concert idea, because it was much simpler than going anywhere else; also nobody had ever done that, so it would be interesting to see what happened when we started playing up there. It was a nice little social study.
We set up a camera in the Apple reception area, behind a window so nobody could see it, and we filmed people coming in. The police and everybody came in saying, ‘You can’t do that! You’ve got to stop.

Don’t Let me Down” was written by John Lennon dedicated to his wife, Yoko Ono and was recorded in 1969 in the Let It Be sessions.

We recorded it in the basement of Apple for Let It Be and later did it up on the roof for the film. We went through it quite a lot for this one. I sang harmony on it, which makes me wonder if I helped with a couple of words, but I don’t think so. It was John’s song…

– The song was later recognized as Lennon-mcCartney as per usual.

Fun Facts!

  • To cope with the weather, John Lennon borrowed Yoko Ono’s fur coat, and Ringo Starr wore his wife Maureen Starkey’s red mac.
  • A version from the following day was selected for inclusion in the unreleased Get Back album, along with a snippet of speech in which Lennon asked Starr to hit the cymbals hard after the intro, to “give me the courage to come screaming in.”
  • On 28 January The Beatles and Preston recorded the version which ended up on the Get Back single. They taped it twice again two days later on the roof of Apple, the first of which was included in the Let It Be film.

+++++LYRICS+++++

Don’t let me down
Don’t let me down
Don’t let me down
Don’t let me down

Nobody ever loved me like she does
Ooh, she does
Yes, she does
And if somebody loved me like she do me
Ooh, she do me
Yes, she does

Don’t let me down
Don’t let me down
Don’t let me down
Don’t let me down

I’m in love for the first time
Don’t you know it’s gonna last?
It’s a love that lasts forever
It’s a love that has no past

Don’t let me down
Don’t let me down
Don’t let me down
Don’t let me down

And from the first time that she really done me
Ooh, she done me
She done me good
I guess nobody ever really done me
Ooh, she done me
She done me good
