America Arrives At The Gates Of Success

In 1975, folk rock band America took the stage with the likes of Aretha Franklin and John Wayne for The Bob Hope Special, and everything pointed to the band having reached the pinnacle of success. With a stunning combination of boy-next-door good looks and flawless harmonies, America’s performance of ‘Sister Golden Hair’ became the performance to watch that night, and it’s the one the band would become the most known for, even decades later.

Their performance of #1 hit ‘Sister Golden Hair’ was met with critical acclaim, and for good reason: America had taken a cue from singer-songwriter Jackson Browne and his ability to set the truth to music for this song about a man explaining to his lover why he doesn’t want to settle down, and the result was the band’s second single to reach the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Fun Fact: ‘Sister Golden Hair’ has sentimental roots. No, really – America’s Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek were inspired by their mothers, who were all blondes.

What an unforgettable night for both the boys in America and their fans, who came out in droves that night to see them! They just don’t make music like this anymore, and while the band admits that the performance was pre-recorded, it definitely doesn’t take away from the magic created whenever America set foot onstage!

+ Sister Golden Hair lyrics +

Well I tried to make it Sunday
But I got so damn depressed
That I set my sights on Monday
And I got myself undressed

I ain’t ready for the altar
But I do agree there’s times
When a woman sure
Can be a friend of mine

Well, I keep on thinkin’ ’bout you
Sister golden hair surprise
And I just can’t live without you
Can’t you see it in my eyes?

I been one poor correspondent
And I been too, too hard to find
But it doesn’t mean
You ain’t been on my mind

Will you meet me in the middle
Will you meet me in the air?
Will you love me just a little
Just enough to show you care?

Well I tried to fake it
I don’t mind sayin’
I just can’t make it

Well, I keep on thinkin’ ’bout you
Sister golden hair surprise
And I just can’t live without you
Can’t you see it in my eyes?

Now I been one poor correspondent
And I been too, too hard to find
But it doesn’t mean
You ain’t been on my mind

Will you meet me in the middle
Will you meet me in the air?
Will you love me just a little
Just enough to show you care?

Well I tried to fake it
I don’t mind sayin’
I just can’t make it
