In a recent conversation with SiriusXM’s “Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk,” rock icon Alice Cooper spoke candidly about retirement, shedding light on what keeps him going despite his lengthy career.
When asked about the right time to retire, Cooper’s response emphasized the mental and physical aspects of the decision.
“It’s all in your head. I really think so. And also if you’re physically well,” Cooper explained. “I would not wanna play Alice Cooper if I didn’t look like Alice, the same way I looked like Alice in the ’70s. I still look like that Alice.”
According to Cooper, maintaining the iconic persona of Alice Cooper is crucial, both in appearance and performance. He emphasized the importance of genuine passion, saying,
“If I couldn’t sing like Alice, if I lost my interest in it if I didn’t really love doing it. And the main thing is if nobody shows up. You can go out on tour and if nobody buys tickets, you’re done. That’s not happened; in fact, it’s kind of doubled for us.”
Cooper attributes his enduring vitality to several factors, including healthy lifestyle choices.
He shared,
“Physically, I can [explain it]. I never smoked cigarettes. And that is a big, that’s one of the big things that ends bands. Cigarettes, you know, are gonna kill your lungs; it’s gonna kill your energy, everything. I quit drinking 40 years ago. I married exactly the right woman.”
The rock legend also stressed the importance of managing stress, citing it as a significant factor in longevity.
Cooper expressed contentment with his support system, mentioning his manager Shep Gordon and producer Bob Ezrin. He highlighted his stress-free approach to life, stating,
“So I’m just having fun out there. I could have retired 30 years ago, but, man, that’s no fun. I wanna be up there on stage playing Alice.”
Alice Cooper’s perspective on retirement serves as a reminder that passion, physical well-being, and a positive mindset can defy the passage of time. As long as he continues to find joy and fulfillment in performing, Cooper shows no signs of slowing down, delighting fans worldwide with his timeless energy and music.
